Chasing "roarers" May and June 1986

New Timetable, first day, May 12th 1986.

The new timetable in May was often waited for in keen anticipation and also a sense of dread. Would, for example the new "Daytime Cobblers" get "roarers" or "cans"? Would more cans be diagrammed on our evening Cobblers as rumoured every year.

Monday May 12th saw me at work to miss out on the inagural daytime Cobblers with 85024 doing 1B01 0925 Euston - Northampton and 81008 doing 1B02 1110 Euston - Northampton. The big event was 81002 producing on 1P02 1015 Euston - Carlisle and 1A61 1500 Carlisle - Euston a serious mileage move and rare worrking for a "roarer".

Still as i awaited 1A53 the return of 1B03 1305 Euston - Northampton, i was pleased to see 85019 screaming South on the Holyhead-Euston, one for a "Cobbler" i thought. Unfortunately 1B03 got 86211 so it was this local namer that took me South from Leighton to Euston with some haste. On approach to Euston 85024 passed us on 1B06 with 85022 following on 1B07. So not many "cans" diagrammed in the new timetable after all we thought. 85040 backed onto our stock and screamed, howled and groaned north on 1B08 1745 Euston - Northampton. We bailed at Leighton as what looked like a "fish" was in Euston Down carriage shed with a "Cobbler" rake.

As hoped for 81020 roared in on 1B09 1815 Euston - Northampton which we did to Northampton. In the "Black Lion" there was great celebration that so many "roarers" had worked, the new timetable looked promising after all.

A few days late it was a similar after work leap to Euston with a choice of "roarers" to return on too with 81005 and 85016 raked in. Festering around Leighton station to watch the early sleepers head North brought worrying gloom in 86323 on 1S07 the normally solid "roaring device" train....

Bowl out number one saw 86436 on 1B10, but much more serious was 86260 getting much cursing as she sung into Rugby wide headlights blazing with 1S06. Fortunately 1S19 got 81006 off Brum.

Thursday June 19th 1986

After various type 2  and a roarer move North to Preston we again waited at Rugby for 1S06.  No wide lights on approach tonight though, 85020 producing for a roar through the night. So the Summer of 86 remained very good for "roarers" on passenger work though as unpredictable as ever which in some ways was all part of the fun!
