BR loco 86209 remembered

Shes failed locally, worked a fair few "Cobblers", spent 4 months at the foot of an embankment between Watford and Bushey!,  but in summary a solid WCML loco for over 35 years...

This loco emerged new from Doncaster Works in October 65. After acceptence tests out of Crewe E3125 was taken into official stock in Nov 65. Renumbered 86209 July 73. Named "City of Coventry" at Coventry station on 020279.

86209 was involved in a fatal collision at Bushey whilst working 1S18 2215 Euston - Glasgow "Night Caledonian" and ended up at the bottom of a steep embankment along with 2  coaches off 1S18 late on January 23rd 1975.  The collision was with 83003 and a failed 86204 on a late running 1A81 1910 Manchester - Euston which had become partially derailed after hitting metal pallets/cages that had fallen off 6M50 Dagenham - Halewood "Fords" freight train hauled by 85017. 83003 was written off in the accident, her driver being tragically killed in the impact with 1S18.

86209 spent 4 months at the foot of the embankment between Watford Jn and Bushey before being removed by road arriving at Crewe Works on April 20th 1975. Despite her severe damage she was returned to service in Nov 75.

A solid WCML career then continued mainly on Inter City duties before being in and out of lease from 1998-2001. She was reallocated to Norwich Crown Point in late Dec 2001  and worked Norwich/Harwich - Liverpool St turns until withdrawl in Jan 2004.

She was moved to MoD Shoeburyness in Oct 2004 and scrapped locally nr Chelmsford a few months later.
