87026 “Redgauntlet” remembered

87026 was delivered new from Crewe Works to Willesden in May 74, this fine machine remaining a Willesden “greyhound” for virtually all her BR career.  The legendary “Redgauntlet” name was added in May 78, by late 82 the loco was renamed the more formal “Sir Richard Arkwright”. A staple WCML career of passenger and freightliner work saw several million mileage amassed. With the pendolino plastification of the WCML most expected 2004 to be her last. Unexpected returns to service saw 87026 gain a bit of a legendary status with the loco’s brief GBRf mail train career in 2005 and an equally brief performance on 2006’s Virgin R90/G21/B05 summer turns. After festering at Oxley and Long Marston 87026 was exported to Bulgaria and continues to see regular use in this fine loco approaches 40 years of service.
