August 1983 remembered-thanks to "TC"

My moves from a 14 day “Midland Railtourer” ticket from 1983.

For those reading this all these years later, the Midland Railtourer was a rover ticket t allowing travel in the following area: Bedford / Bletchley / Banbury / Stratford Upon Avon / Redditch / Kidderminster / Church Stretton / Shrewsbury / Chester / Crewe / Stoke On Trent / Derby / Matlock / Nottingham / Leicester / Bedford.

Being 18, I was dependent on public transport, the “fast car” for me was a thing of the future!

My usual morning train was the 09.00 St. Pancras – Derby, so this ticket “may” have not been valid before 09.00 Monday – Friday. I can’t remember if that was the case or not.

The HST fleet at the time was going through a pretty bad time and it was quite common to get loco hauled trains out vice HST’s. A regular cross country diagram at that time was (I think):  xx.xx Bristol – Leeds / 12.30 Leeds – Cardiff / 17.47 Cardiff – Derby / 21.25 Derby – Bristol. I used the Leeds – Cardiff / Cardiff – Derby legs of this a bit.

There were also two relief trains which seemed to run pretty much every day, 1V42 09.40 York – Plymouth & 1E72 09.13 Paignton – Leeds. 1V42 would give you around half an hour at Birmingham for 1E72 back north, and we would usually hope for a 45/0, 46 or an NB 47 on these. This was the year before the Miner’s strike, so the “big” 37’s etc were still on their coal trains!

To highlight my “empty book status” I have underlined the winners…

Sunday 7th August 1983

A fairly eventful day to begin, 25’s dragging Rugby – Bletchley in the morning was out of my reach as was 20179+20191 on the Derby – Skegness relief as they missed the last train south Bedford. The hoped for “40” on 1G06 turned up at 47087 and the Birmingham – Nuneaton drags over ran, 47308 being a nice bonus.

45050 was a nice start vice HST, but was late and missed 45009 on 1V42. 20179+20191 had come off the “Skegs”, we saw them on an MGR train going into Willington Power Station. 1D55 17.35 St. Pancras – Nottingham was always a tight connection onto the Derby – Skegness relief, and on this evening 45036 started moving just as 1D55 ground to a halt.

The 20’s on the Skegs were the same for the third day… 20160+20180 & 20153+20167. 20160+20180 went to Skegness around 25 times that summer! An Inverness “47” on the southbound relief was unusual, but the top engine of the day was 25282 on the Skegness – Derby relief, certainly the train to cover that week.

Another day and another winner on the Derby – Skegness relief, and one of the pairs of 20’s had changed. A bit of a fright on 1D54 16.35 St. Pancras – Nottingham though… After leaving Market Harborough (right time) we got no more than 20 mph all the way to Leicester, a defective coach was to blame. After arriving in Leicester over 30 late it was a fast HST to Nottingham for 25201.

I had heard that Crewe Depot were using 25’s on the first train to Cardiff on a Monday, apparently problems with the 33 that had been stabled over the weekend. A good move with 25161 working to Crewe and 33211 then coming out to play. Disaster struck later on as 45125 was late in Derby, missing the DMU to Long Eaton for what was a winning pair of 20’s (20072+20158) on the Skegness – Derby relief.
