Midland Railtourer #5 Aug 83 Coming towards the end.

thanks to Guy Kendrick for the cracking memories

Only two more left for summer 83 and both I only did six days on each. As will be seen by the last day of the last one my record keeping was shoddy. I think I was probably a bit burnt out, and also had 6th form to look forward to (without doubt the most enjoyable two years I think I can ever recall for lots of reasons!)

Still, I managed five more 40's..including the "last vac" 40009, and two on the penultimate day, so I was a happy bunny.

Sunday 7th August 1983

Typical Sunday meant drags, but as I was isolated at International (to coin a phrase) this meant a DMU to New Street to start the day.

Bog-cart (TS) 0847 BINT - BNS shuttle

Very pleased to find some rare power from Scotlandshire at New Street for the first proper thrash of the day;

37037 (ED) dragging 86240 (WN) 1A08 1000 Wolves - Euston BNS-Nuneaton

Return as bit more mundane but nonetheless acceptable;

45149 (TO) dragging 87011 (WN) 1000 Euston - Wolves Nuneaton - BNS

Some mundane motoring up and down the BNS Wolves corridor before the Bristol - Leeds later that afternoon;

47578 (ED) 1S61 1200 BNS - Glasgow BNS - Wolves

47100 (CD) 1V84 1046 Liverpool - PaddWolves - BNS

47475 (BS) 1M00 0925 Brighton - Manchester BNS - Wolves

86254 (WN) 1A25 1600 Wolves - Euston Wolves - BNS

Second highlight of the day was 40029, which took the Leeds Bristol down earlier in the day, and is well documented on Flickr. Fortunately she did the return, if my memory isnt that shot, as far as Derby which was lucky for us. Managed to cop the front window as well.

40029 (LO) 1E08 1425 Bristol - Leeds BNS - Derby

Return throughout to Coventry was the Newcastle - Poole for me;

45143 (TO) 1O25 1340 Newcastle - Poole Derby - BNS

47481 (CD) as above BNS - Coventry.

Now this move flummoxes me even now. I have no idea why me and Dave decided to go to Walsall. Who, in their right minds, would choose to go to Walsall?! Nevertheless

304019 (LO) some Dino rock n roll 1830 BNS - Walsall and return! BNS - Walsall - BNS.

Clearly some gen was floating around on the platform after arrival at New Street, which explains the following;

86212 (WN) 1P62 1040 Euston - Blackpool BNS - Crewe

47448 (CD) 1D48 1310 Crewe - Holyhead Crewe - Chester

This gen appeared to be accurate because the old girl produced! Red buffer beams and black-rim marker discs. Very old school, very smart.

40004 (LO) 1A56 1310 Holyhead - Euston Chester - Crewe.

To put some sprinkles on the ice-cream;

Thursday 11th August 1983

Possibly fired up by the chance of dropping onto another random 40 kick-out, today was spent up by Chester and was 99% wasted, but an easy day in the sunshine nevertheless with a couple of "foreign" EH duffs and a 47/3;

86243 (WN) 1D27 0805 Euston - Holyhead Coventry - Crewe

47545 (BS) same train Crewe - Chester

47480 (TO) 1010 Holyhead - Euston Chester - Crewe

Saturday 13th August 1983

Clearly the plan was the first rats off Wolves, but things changed on arrival at Wolves.

47543 (BS) 1O52 0807 BNS - Brighton BINT - Coventry

86219 (WN) 0745 Euston - Aberystwyth Coventry - Wolverhampton

25284 and 276 were due to take it forward, but I didnt need either, and there was word of the possibility of a 40 on the coast.

13088325076n083r.jpg25076 and 25083 were the "12 o'clock" rats that day, thanks to TC for the Wolverhampton phot

86315 (WN) 1D27 Euston - Holyhead Wolves - Crewe

And lo and behold the sun shone and the "last vac" 40009 was sat in the far left platform with a rake of MK1s. The engine wasnt running at that point and a quick check with station staff revealed it was indeed working a relief to Holyhead. Front window bagged

40009 (LO) 1D91 1146 Crewe - Holyhead relief Crewe - Chester.

Flickr link to a fine phot taken by Bidston6F on Flickr, from the very window I had just vacated at Chester.

On this rare occasionI found myself with enough spare change to possibly cover any Grip between Chester and Llandudno (I got caught out earlier in the year!) so decided to cover the Scarboro - Bangor. It didnt produce anything worthy, but we took it anyway on the off-chance of picking up something interesting on the way back.

47232 (CF) 1M58 0854 Scarboro - Bangor Chester - Colwyn Bay.

We bailed here as past Colwyn I thought we stood a higher chance of a grip we'd been OK to then!

47579 (SF) 1D48 1320 Crewe - Holyhead Colwyn Bay - Llandudno Jct. I recorded that this service ended up pushing a failed 47529 (CD) and its train, which I believe was 1D43 1000 Euston - Holyhead.

47455 (CD) 1610 Holyhead - Euston Llandudno Jct - Crewe. No grip!

Huge mileage moves on the Nantwich next;

33039 (HG) 1V07 1930 Crewe - Cardiff Crewe - Nantwich (4.5 miles)

33211 (HG) 1M73 1715 Cardiff - Crewe Nantwich - Crewe

Once again I can only surmise that platform gen was floating around once we landed at BNS, or I caught a whiff of it as I jumped on;

86211 (WN)1P62 1040 Euston - Blackpool BNS - Crewe..which produced, on bailing at Crewe;

Friday 26th August 1983

My final ever Mid-day and in hindsight looking at these notes I could tell I was totally knackered!

47454 (CD) 1M88 0625 Poole - Manchester Coventry - BNS

86326 (WN) same train BNS - Crewe.

26088345123n47529r.jpgAlso at Crewe that mornng was the unusual pairing of 45123 and 47529 on the 0805 Euston - Holyhead

At this point I remember saying to myself "Sod this, I'm going back for 1E57 then I'm going home

87101 (WN) was on the next service back to BNS, I don't even know what it was, but I took it Crewe - BNS.

37127 (BR) 1E57 1530(FO) BNS - York BNS - Derby

26088337127r.jpgWhich brings us to my penultimate loco hauled of the Mid season , and recorded for posterity here, 37127 at Derby.

A bog-cart move back to New Street then

86246 (WN) on The Clansman BNS - Coventry saw me done, bar a 310 back to Canley.

Many happy memories for me, and some great haulage. What a shame we couldnt be in several places at once, because there always seemed to be someone else with better moves, larger power, more gen. Given hindsight and everything being on a plate now via the Internet, everything back in the day was a game. The Game, in essence. It was all about "What If" or "Maybe" and it just isn't like that any more. I didn't have access to Loco Hauled Travel which I think started in 82 but I certainly used it in 1984 - 87. However, the heyday of 83 for me because it was the independence, making new mates, and going to lots of different places!

The memories are mine but please feel free to add or amend anything if it jumps out as incorrect. Hopefully this lock-down means youre all as bored as me!

Thanks again Guy, good stuff!
