Getting them in, the "Deltics"

Back in 1972 our limited resources meant ECML visits were fairly infrequent. A long bus ride via Luton allowed a day at Hitchin, Kings X visits on London trips and Merrymakers to York allowed plenty opportunity to spot ECML power.

"You could clear them in a day" was my mates claim re the Deltics which he despised because they were so common. Well as shown below a good day at Hitchin could see 14 of the 22 strong fleet viewed but there were "always some on shed or Doncaster Works" our Hitchin mates informed us between games of football in the car park.

So were the Deltics the easiest class to clear on BR?. Well the "Peaks" were common enough at Luton but at 190 plus they took a good few years to clear despite working every single train through Luton! The "cans" were very common too but at 100 strong they too took a while. The 9 strong "baby Deltic" fleet were once easy to get, but by 1972 these were withdrawn and scattered across various hard to get round Eastern depots.

So a day at Hitchin back in April 72 produced 14 of the class namely

9003, 9005, 9006, 9007, 9008, 9009, 9011, 9012, 9014, 9015, 9016, 9018, 9019 and 9020.

The York Merrymaker from Luton on June 10th 1972

produced the following Deltics, 9000, 9001, 9004, 9005, 9017 with 9000, 9001, 9004 and 9017 new for the year.

So that left just 9002, 9010, 9013 and 9021 to clear the Deltics for 1972..

Another Hitchin session on August 11th 1972 produced the following Deltics

9002, 9003, 9006, 9008, 9008, 9013, 9014, 9015, 9017, 9018, 9021,

with 9002, 9013 and 9021 cleared for 1972

And so that left just 9010 to view and she was at Kings X one evening after a London trip

on September 2nd 1972 where the following Deltics were viewed.

9010, 9014, 9018, 9020

So the Deltics were fairly easy to clear for us Luton based spotters, great locos, great memories too!
