Last days of route 89

With the summer 1988 timetable marking the end of 33's on the Portsmouth - Bristol/Cardiff route, I decided that some farewell bashes needed to be done. Thanks to "TC" for the memories

Working for the railway, and on a four day week, I was in the lucky position of having both the time and the validity.

Wednesday 4th May 1988

With a couple of overnights planned, I had a lie in and headed down to Waterloo for the 14.10 Salisbury.

33111 14.10 Waterloo - Salisbury (Waterloo - Salisbury)

33038 15.10 Portsmouth - Bristol (Salisbury - Bath)

33030 16.20 Cardiff - Portsmouth (Bath - Westbury)

33209 16.10 Portsmouth - Cardiff (Westbury - Bristol)

33209 18.10 Cardiff - Portsmouth (Bristol - Salisbury)

33112 17.33 Exeter - Waterloo (Salisbury - Andover)

33058 19.47 Exeter - Waterloo (Andover - Woking)

33114 22.52 Waterloo - Weymouth (Woking - Southampton)

33112 was very late arriving at Salisbury, I forget which class 50 had failed, but their reliability at the time was not very good. Once onboard 33112, I was advised that 33058 was also out and not far behind. Having a preference for the old "HG" machines, I bailed at Andover. 33058 put up a storming run, and I bailed at Woking in order to make the down mails.

Thursday 5th May 1988

At Southampton 33028 was on the 01.55 to Bristol, and this would normally be my move. I decided to gamble on the lack of class 50's and hope the up mails would get a 33, which in turn would hopefully do the 07.00 Waterloo - Exeter. Unfortunately a match fit 50019 was waiting at Eastleigh, so I decided to head back west from Woking on the 02.45 Waterloo - Bournemouth. A unit back from Bournemouth put me back on the 33's. I wasn't aware that there was a 07.25 Bournemouth - Eastleigh loco hauled service, which according to the bashing years was 73002 that morning. In hindsight I should have done that.

33108 22.38 Weymouth - Waterloo (Southampton - Eastleigh)

50019 22.38 Weymouth - Waterloo (Eastleigh - Woking)

33040 02.45 Waterloo - Bournemouth (Woking - Eastleigh)

33108 02.45 Waterloo - Bournemouth (Eastleigh - Bournemouth)

EMU (Bournemouth - Southampton)

33030 06.05 Salisbury - Portsmouth (Southampton - Portsmouth)

33040 08.10 Portsmouth - Cardiff (Portsmouth - Bristol)

37159 10.10 Portsmouth - Swansea (Bristol - Swansea)

37159 16.05 Swansea - Portsmouth (Swansea - Bristol)

33119 16.05 Swansea - Portsmouth (Bristol - Westbury)

33023 17.10 Portsmouth - Cardiff (Westbury - Bath)

33040 18.10 Cardiff - Portsmouth (Bath - Southampton)

33013 20.25 Portsmouth - Cardiff (Southampton - Salisbury)

33023 21.45 Bristol - Southampton (Salisbury - Southampton)

Although the plan had been to spend time on the 33's, a required 37159 was too tempting and I ended up going through to Swansea with it. Back on the 33's, and the booked Salisbury - Romsey - Eastleigh - Southampton move with 33023.

Friday 6th May 1988

A decent overnight, 33023 and the stock off the previous nights 21.45 Bristol - Southampton, stays in the station at Southampton for 01.55 to Bristol, so no need to get off. The 01.55 arrives at Bristol soon after 04.00, and the buffet is open for hot drinks. The stock for the 05.00 only arrives a few minutes before departure, but I am soon asleep. Sometimes you get disturbed at Yeovil, if not you are ok under the trains gets busy once it has left Westbury on the return.

33023 01.55 Southampton - Bristol (Southampton - Bristol)

33059 05.00 Bristol - Yeovil (Bristol - Yeovil Pen Mill)

33059 06.55 Yeovil - Bristol (Yeovil Pen Mill - Bristol)

33023 08.00 Cardiff - Portsmouth (Bristol - Salisbury)

33027 08.30 Brighton - Cardiff (Salisbury - Bristol)

33119 09.50 Swansea - Portsmouth (Bristol - Bath)

33110 10.10 Portsmouth - Swansea (Bath - Bristol)

33027 12.06 Cardiff - Portsmouth (Bristol - Salisbury)

33019 13.10 Portsmouth - Bristol (Salisbury - Bristol)

33059 15.10 Cardiff - Brighton (Bristol - Southampton)

33027 17.10 Portsmouth - Cardiff (Southampton - Salisbury)

33019 16.20 Cardiff - Portsmouth (Salisbury - Portsmouth)

33030 20.25 Portsmouth - Cardiff (Portsmouth - Westbury)

33027 21.45 Bristol - Southampton (Westbury - Southampton)

Not many "HG" machines out, but a 33/1 for a 33/1 on route 89 was different.

Saturday 7th May 1988

This "may" have been the morning the stock arrived with 37158 on the front. After a lengthy wait 47647 appeared, not what the assembled class 33 men were hoping for.

33027 01.55 Southampton - Bristol (Southampton - Bristol)

47647 05.00 Bristol TM - Yeovil (Bristol - Yeovil Pen Mill)

47647 06.55 Yeovil - Bristol (Yeovil Pen Mill - Bristol)

33030 08.00 Cardiff - Portsmouth (Bristol - Salisbury)

33059 08.30 Brighton - Cardiff (Salisbury - Bristol)

33040 09.50 Swansea - Portsmouth (Bristol - Southampton)

73209 12.28 Weymouth - Waterloo (Southampton - Waterloo)

Later on, and with some "gen" I managed to track down my second to last 73/1, 73120, although by now it had been renumbered to 73209.

Monday 9th May 1988

Unable to get a days leave, so a later start than I would have liked after an early shift. I was happy with 33211 as by diagram it should do the 01.55 back to Bristol.

33111 17.00 Waterloo - Salisbury (Waterloo - Salisbury)

33008 16.20 Cardiff - Portsmouth (Salisbury - Portsmouth)

33028 20.25 Portsmouth - Cardiff (Portsmouth - Westbury)

33211 21.45 Bristol - Southampton (Westbury - Southampton, via Eastleigh)

Tuesday 10th May 1988

An action packed night! Rather withered to see 33211 get ripped at Southampton. The drivers quote of "Off to Eastleigh for fuel", added some comfort, but it was 33039 that appeared some time later for the 01.55 back to Bristol.

The exact details are a bit lost writing this up 30 odd years later, but at some point the "gen" must have been known about 33208 being out vice a class 50 on the Waterloo - Exeter's. In theory it was allocated the 09.10 Waterloo - Exeter. Looking back at my moves that morning, it is fair to say I would not have got on 47425 for any other reason. If I had not known about 33208, then my move would have been to head west to Cardiff with the 05.50 from Portsmouth, which at least in theory would have given me a 33.

Another "what if" worth noting is that had 33211 come back for 01.55 Southampton - Bristol, then it would have stood a fighting chance of being in the frame for the 08.00 Cardiff - Portsmouth instead of 47425.

The 47's did have a daily booked diagram between Bristol and Portsmouth, 10.08 ex Bristol and 14.10 ex Portsmouth. A train I tended to avoid, 47503 worked it that day.

33039 01.55 Southampton - Bristol (Southampton - Bristol)

33028 05.00 Bristol - Yeovil (Bristol - Yeovil Pen Mill)

33028 06.55 Yeovil - Bristol (Yeovil Pen Mill - Bristol)

47425+33009 08.00 Cardiff - Portsmouth (Bristol - Salisbury, 33009 dead in train)

33208 09.10 Waterloo - Exeter (Salisbury - Exeter)

33208 14.17 Exeter - Waterloo (Exeter - Salisbury)

33048 14.00 Cardiff - Portsmouth (Salisbury - Romsey)

33201 16.10 Portsmouth - Cardiff (Romsey - Bristol TM)

33201 18.10 Cardiff - Portsmouth (Bristol TM - Southampton)

33048 20.25 Portsmouth - Cardiff (Southampton - Westbury)

33030 21.45 Southampton - Bristol (Westbury - Southampton, via Eastleigh)

33208 gave a good run on the 09.10 down to Exeter, so time for a plate of food before heading back with the 14.17 Exeter - Waterloo. The choice on the way back was to either stay with 33208 through to Waterloo, or find 33201 for a few miles, assuming it had stuck to diagram, which it had. All in all, a cracking 24 hours.

Wednesday 11th May 1988

Happy to see 33211 on hand for the 05.00 to Yeovil. Looking back at "the Bashing Years", apparently after it went to Eastleigh it came back into play with the 10.10 Portsmouth - Swansea.

33030 01.55 Southampton - Bristol (Southampton - Bristol)

33211 05.00 Bristol - Yeovil (Bristol - Yeovil Pen Mill)

33211 06.55 Yeovil - Bristol (Yeovil Pen Mill - Bristol)

33030 08.00 Cardiff - Portsmouth (Bristol - Southampton)

33008 10.10 Portsmouth - Swansea (Southampton - Bradford on Avon)

33059 09.50 Swansea - Portsmouth (Bradford on Avon - Portsmouth)

33201 15.10 Portsmouth - Bristol (Portsmouth - Warminster)

33009 15.10 Cardiff - Brighton (Warminster - Salisbury)

33112 17.29 Salisbury - Waterloo (Salisbury - Waterloo)

Thursday 12th May 1988

A simple afternoon bash to do "the Brighton" through to Brighton.

33114 14.10 Waterloo - Salisbury (Waterloo - Salisbury)

33011 15.10 Portsmouth - Bristol (Salisbury - Warminster)

33027 15.10 Cardiff - Brighton (Warminster - Brighton)

Friday 13th May 1988

Another simple afternoon bash on the last weekday on route "89".

33115 12.10 Waterloo - Salisbury (Waterloo - Salisbury)

33201 13.10 Portsmouth - Bristol (Salisbury - Bristol)

33039 15.10 Cardiff - Brighton (Bristol - Salisbury)

33116 17.29 Salisbury - Waterloo (Salisbury - Waterloo)

Saturday 14th May 1988

I decided not to do the last day, the Area Manager's Office at Salisbury had arranged a railtour with 33's from Waterloo to Carmarthen, so me and Mr. Mayes did that instead. 33026 started out from Waterloo, 33112 being added at Woking and the pair stayed together for the day. Thanks again to "TC" forthe cracking write up
