“Scaz” on the move, March 2016

Back on March 12th 2016 Chiltern’s Ruston Shunter “Scaz” was dragged from Wembley Chiltern Depot to Aylesbury via Wycome and Risborough. We believe a 68 dragged the shunter as 8Z99 but as below, progress was very, very steady. At Aylesbury “Scaz” and presumably  Aylesbury’s shunter “Lesley” will be roaded out to pastures new.

A very rare class 8 move on today’s railway. Thanks to “Real Times trains” for the gen.

Thats a 4 hour (net) stagger for the 36.76 mile journey, an approximate average speed of 9mph!  A very unusual move on todays railway.

230316scazr.jpg The former Chiltern Wembley shunter “Scaz” (although now denamed) at Aylesbury a week after the long drag North, taken 230316

Back in BR days movement of shunters on the main line were much more common as shunters were often outbased some miles from their home shed and Road movement was obviously not normally used. Heres two, any more memories of “slow moves”??

The Swanbourne Yard pilot move

Thanks to “Poker Dot” for the late 60’s memories. “They used to take us out to Swanbourne Yard from Bletchley on the railway bus. Often late on Saturday afternoons. It was usually 12049 or 12099 which we had to bring back to Bletchley TMD for maintenance”.

“It took what seemed hours trundling along deserted 4-5 miles of North Bucks open country and at night it was very hard to see anything ahead particular in rain with virtually no loco lights. We would then be checked at the foot of the flyover and the “pilot” (shunter) would growl and vibrate angrily climbing over the flyover. Once dropped off at TMD it was normally shift over and back to the warmth of the mess room or home!”

The Luton pilot move

Until the late 70’s Luton had a shunter which busied itself shunting Crescent Road yard, tripping parcel vans to the Newspaper Dock off the Down Fast and more. Initially a Cricklewood duty, this too became a Bletchley turn shortly before its demise.

Thanks to the “Shy Night Shedman” for the memories of the long turn which he sometimes did on a monthly basis. Normally very early on a Sunday morning we would take the 08 North from Cricklewood to Luton a 25 mile 2-3 hour journey. At Luton we would have to return the other 08 needing maintenance South, sometimes as daylight broke with our trusty pilot gently growling and whirring over the mists of Chiltern Green and beyond. Back at Cricklewood it was shift over, not much mileage but a very different turn!
