"TC" on the Mid, July 83

Reading Guy's nostalgic write up "Midland Railtourer 4, Late July 1983", rang a few bells and I kept thinking was I on that?.

So with plenty of time on my hands at the moment, I decided to dig the books out, and yes, I was also out that week.

Now, I should explain before anyone shouts "didn't this bloke do any work?", that I was between College, and a course which was like the fore-runner to the Youth Training Scheme of the time. As I had something to do in September, the parents were quite happy for me to be out on the bash "funds permitting". I wasn't out every day but did manage three weeks on Midland Railtourer's and a couple of Anglia Day Rangers that summer.

I believe the ticket was valid after 09.00, which meant the 09.00 St. Pancras - Derby HST, due off Bedford about 09.40 was my first train.

There were a couple of reliefs which ran every day, 1V42 09.40 Leeds - Plymouth, due off Derby around 11.15, and 1E72 09.13 Paignton - Leeds. If 1V42 was on time, you made 1E72 at Birmingham with half an hour to spare. Sometimes the loco off 1V42 would do 1E72 the next day and vice versa.

As I didn't record HST's or DMU's / EMU's, I have enlisted a mate who has a 1983 timetable to fill in the blanks.

With the gen on the reliefs now known, tried my luck. 45009 a winner. No "gen" on the northbound relief, so either dud or late. An hour at Leicester at Leicester spent on finding out what the 40 (40050) was on the depot. Only time I have seen one there!

It was impossible to see which 40 it was from passing trains, so I had a walk up to "the bird cage", a path which leaves the road by the bridge and cuts round into the housing estate. Impossible to gets shots from here now, nature has taken over.  40050 was duly photted.

The class 40 motherlist is interesting reading. It has it working 6E95 Warrington Arpley - Parkeston on Monday 25th July 1983, noted at Chesterfield at 22.28. The following entries have it at Crewe Diesel Depot on 04.08.1983, with engine trouble. Next entries are a tow to Doncaster where it was condemned.

With the knowledge of a new 20 on the Skegs, another late evening. Some late evening "gen" on an Aberystwyth - Derby adex prompts a union meeting. Do we want to get home at 11.00pm or 4.00 am though? In the event circumstances dictated the evening. 20190 was below pair with 20159 doing most of the work and they were late. 20163+20172 were right behind them at Beeston, but a red signal at Trent Junction saw us watch the last Sheffield - St. Pancras go past. At Leicester the HST was long gone.

Despite getting home at 04.00, I was back out the next morning! No definite "gen" on 46032, but it would have been around 14.30 from Birmingham NS. I can find a few occasions in 1983 when a 1Z16 09.50 Plymouth - Crewe relief ran. 46032 would have been close to this.

A couple of hours in Nuneaton meeting up with a mate who did the overnight with me explains the gap between 47077 and the 31's. In hindsight should probably have gone for the 40080+40196 on the Holyhead - Euston.
